  1. 1793-1864. English poet. His work includes
  2. Poems Descriptive of Rural Life 1820, The
  3. Village Minstrel 1821, and Shepherd's
  4. Calendar 1827. Clare's work was largely
  5. rediscovered in the 20th century. Born at
  6. Helpstone, near Peterborough, the son of a
  7. farm labourer, Clare spent most of his life
  8. in poverty. He was given an annuity from the
  9. Duke of Exeter and other patrons, but had to
  10. turn to work on the land. He spent his last
  11. 20 years in Northampton asylum. His early
  12. life is described in his autobiography, first
  13. published 1931.
